New Life Journey Pre Op to Week 1 Post Op

Hello Everyone!

My name is Mickey and I am embarking on a long but well worth it journey. After much research (years) I have decided to get the gastric sleeve. I am 45 years old and I weigh 404 lbs.

Honestly up until recently I really didn't think of myself as being that big until I actually saw a few pictures of myself and I was like Damn! What happened? How could you let yourself get to this point? Then I answered those questions, I know exactly what happened too much smoking, laziness, eating all the wrong foods, and just not caring about myself enough to make a change. I was suffering from severe OSA (Obstructive Sleep Apnea) which affected my work.

I consulted Dr Deep Goel  Director in Minimal Access, Bariatric & Surgical Gastroenterology Department at BLK Super Specialty Hospital, New Delhi. I was explained in detail all 3 options available :

·         Adjustable gastric banding (AGB)
·         Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB)
·         Vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG)

My BMI was 57 and i was advised VSG. It took me 2 months to decide to get the VSG done. I got all pre op tests done. My Anesthetist advised a ABG test which showed a very high Co2 content. I was advised to use a Bilevel positive airway pressure (BPAP) machine for a week to improve Oxygen content in my blood. Hence the surgery was deferred by a week.

Back home rented the BPAP machine and guys let me tell you quitting smoking is easier than going through all this.

Rechecked into hospital after a week. I was admitted since there was marginal improvement in Co2 level. Next morning on day of Surgery final blood test was done and result was shocking. My Platellete count was 57000. Surgery was refused since minimum requirement was 150000. Dr Goel summoned Hematologist to evaluate. I was discharged and put on 5 days of medication. Post 5 days another sample test was done and my count had gone up by then.

I was finally admitted on 15th December 2013 fro surgery. My weight on this day was 395 lbs.
I was wheeled in early in the morning for Surgery. Every person in Pre op room had a positive attitude, all greeted with a smile. Went into OT. Next thing i know that i was in Post Op recovery. Woke up with Sore throat and little pain. Since i had issues related to my breathing and blood i was moved to Medical ICU for monitoring. I spent the night there came out clean and was moved to the room. Spent 1 night in the room and was discharged the next day. Pain was minimal but back hurt due to lying down in the same position. I was able to walk and move freely. I had 2 incisions of surgery which were stitched.

So I checked in on 15th Dec 2013 and was discharged on 18th Dec 2013. Getting Surgery done seems the easiest part and your doctor also will tell you the same. The real effort starts when you are discharged and requested to follow a diet.
Diet plan is simple.
Week 1 and 2 clear liquids basically Water, Fresh Fruit Juice (homemade without pulp) Sugar free jello, Vegetable to Chicken Broth. You can also used sugar free candies and lollies. Make sure that you shop for the diet before going for Surgery. So i have been on liquid diet have not craved for food at all. Today on 24th Dec 2013 i went for getting my stitches undone. Pretty painless process. Today i weighed 386 lbs. So basically i am down 18 lbs. Today is my 8th day post op and i am still on clear liquids.
Next Update : December 30th 2013
